The Freedom in Responsibility

Some responsibilities are easy to see, easy to understand. For example, if you are a parent, you are responsible for your child. But, we are very obviously also responsible for ourselves as well. Do we actually take this on, fully and completely, though?

I was in my mid twenties when I put on a huge amount of weight. I desperately blamed my work environment, looking for any kind of health issue and then I had the ultimate excuse. A counsellor enlightened me…. I had obsessive compulsive eating disorder.

The weight didn’t shift, as I didn’t have to take responsibility. It wasn’t my fault you see, I had a condition. So I needed to be cared for, I needed to be loved carefully and taken care of. If you asked me though, I would have put my hand on my heart and said I took responsibility for it. As I was always on one fad diet or another. But none of these lasted, my behaviour didn’t change and I certainly didn’t take any ownership of the excess weight I wanted to lose.

Years later I had a glimpse of enlightenment. This moment, helped me to know that I could really be liberated in life. I knew that this was all I then wanted. This was the ultimate goal of all the searches I had, had in life. I pursued this ferociously, like nothing else I had before. I took responsibility for my experience of life, for how I wanted to live. This was the first time I really started to understand the complete freedom gained from taking this step forward. But responsibility is not about accepting yourself. It is about so much more. It is about accepting your life fully as it is.

There are obviously things in our lives that will always be outside of our control. And when we accept responsibility, this does not mean we then have to blame ourselves when things do not meet our expectations. From deciding you are in control of your life though, you are taking the first step to real freedom.

If you want to be completely free, to exist without blame, judgement, pain, then know that only you can actually free yourself. A good teacher can show you the way though. And then can shorten this path for you, as Maxx did for me. All you need to do now is choose to put your foot forward, one step after another.
